Volunteering in the fire department

Volunteering in the fire department is a unique experience that can be as rewarding and educational as you choose to make it. Motivation, dedication and professionalism are qualities that successful volunteers must possess. Members of the Joanna Fire Department not only possess these qualities, but are continuously seeking to further their knowledge and skills as well.

Some of the benefits available to volunteers

Basic requirements
  • At least 16 years of age
  • No previous training required
  • Criminal background check conducted by SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED)
  • Completion of medical physical conducted by Laurens County Fire Service contracted representative
  • Completion of fire and related courses to a minimum NFPA Firefighter I level. These courses include:
    • 1152 – Fundamentals of Fire Fighting
    • 2722 – Hazardous Materials Awareness (Online)
    • 2728 – Hazardous Materials Operations
    • Medical First Responder and CPR
    • 1153 – Fire Fighter I
    • 1210 – Emergency Vehicle Driver Training
    • 1220 – Pumper Operations
    • 3330 – Basic Auto Extrication
Once a member has attained specific levels of training and experience, they are eligible to participate in any and all of the duties and functions of a firefighter/medical first responder. Some of the general duties that one could expect to perform as a volunteer firefighter/medical first responder include:

Fire suppression
Rescue of victims trapped by fire or motor vehicle accident
Assisting EMS on medical first responder calls
Driving and maintaining emergency vehicles
